Ode To Mothers

Ode To Mothers

Encouraged to hear the first sounds
Where we were immersed in your ocean
Here tethered in your love that abounds
We felt at peace while helpless to devotion

A place unlike any other for us, a space in you
We waited patiently for you to bid us go
As the thrill of our presence led to pain anew
Then brought to a world in a stream that flowed

This joy, this pain, when exhaustively first received
A journey on which many didn't live to see
Grateful for being allowed to be conceived
Here we are for your timeless love, so free

The heart we heard, now the first face we see
Helpless to know, still needing life in your flow
When my eyes were closed, yours looked at me
No companion so dear as your warmth we know

Dearest One, when all would leave us, surely
We find your presence to rely on along life's way
In lessons, we learn that only you can teach lovingly
So much love given to see us through each passing day

Wisdom bowed at your feet when you first appeared
She smiled as graced by your presence endeavored to hold
For this last act of creation, none can compare
How blessed we were as all in this world

Dreams we share with you, not just a few
Prayers for us, we felt that never got old
Genes we share, one day you'll take with you
We will not have you forever to hug and to hold

As with our first steps, you're always here
When afraid of the dark, your footsteps we hear
You are the best for us, we would never share
What would our lives be without mothers who care
